Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Golden Sandstone in the Maluti Foothills

Golden Gate Highlands National Park lies in the north-eastern Free State’s Maluti Mountains, between Clarens and the eastern highlands. It is a park of glowing sandstone cliffs, grassland, ravines and wide mountain weather, where a visitor can combine real hiking with wildlife watching, Basotho cultural interpretation and a slower appreciation of the landscape.

Why the Sandstone Glows

The park’s famous colour comes from the way sunlight catches its weathered sandstone cliffs, especially early and late in the day. Rock layers, grassland slopes and mountain streams make the scenery more than a photograph: they provide the habitats for plants, birds and animals adapted to the highland climate.

Hikes, Walks and Trails

Golden Gate is one of the Free State’s key hiking destinations, but the routes differ greatly in distance, elevation and exposure. Choose a trail that matches your group’s fitness, available daylight and the forecast. Carry water, a warm layer, rain protection and footwear with grip; mountain weather can change quickly and cliffs are not places for shortcuts or loose-footed exploration.

Wildlife and Birding

Game watching is part of the park experience, with grassland and mountain animals often visible from roads and walks. SANParks records 54 mammal species and 256 bird species. Give wildlife room, use binoculars and do not approach animals for a photograph. The most memorable moments may be a raptor over a ridge, a baboon call or a quiet herd in evening light.

Culture and Deep Time

The park landscape is connected to Basotho cultural history, rock art and fossils. The Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretive Centre adds another way to understand the region’s long natural history. Treat cultural sites and fossils with the same care as wildlife: do not touch, remove or mark them, and use accredited interpretation where available.

Stay Long Enough

Day visitors can enjoy viewpoints and shorter walks, while overnight guests have more freedom to work around weather and make use of the early and late light. SANParks offers accommodation, camping and activities, but bookings, trail availability and facilities should be confirmed before travel, especially in school holidays or severe weather.

Before You Go

Use the SANParks Golden Gate Highlands National Park page for current trails, bookings, gates and visitor rules. Leave enough time to return safely; a summit view is never worth being caught out by darkness, mist or lightning.
