Komati River Valley Safari Country
Nkomazi Game Reserve is a private reserve in Mpumalanga’s Komati River country, where broad valleys, mountains, grassland and bushveld meet. It is an accommodation-based safari destination, best approached as a planned stay with guided activities rather than a public reserve for independent hiking or casual day access.
Landscape Before the Checklist
The Komati River gives Nkomazi much of its character. Its watercourse, surrounding slopes and open ground create changing habitat, light and views. A good visit gives time to smaller details — birds, grasses, insects, tracks and river sounds — rather than treating every drive as a race to find a particular animal.
Guided Nature Walks
The reserve offers guided nature walks led by qualified guides, with the focus on plants, birds, insects and animal signs. These walks must be arranged when booking, are subject to guide availability and have an age restriction. They are not self-guided trails and should not be attempted independently in wildlife habitat.
River and Night-Sky Activities
Fishing on the Komati River and stargazing have been listed as guest activities, subject to weather, river conditions, season and operator availability. Catch-and-release fishing or a ranger-led activity may be a wonderful addition to a stay, but neither should be assumed without confirming the current programme directly with the reserve.
Stay Prepared
As with any Lowveld visit, take sun protection, comfortable natural-coloured clothing, a light warm layer, insect protection and sensible footwear. Ask about malaria advice, drive times, luggage limits, children on activities, dietary arrangements and what is included in a particular accommodation booking.
Private Reserve Etiquette
Follow your guide’s instructions at all times, keep noise and light to a minimum, never leave the vehicle or camp without approval and do not feed animals. In a private reserve, booked guests and guides share a responsibility to keep the wildlife experience safe and low-impact.
