Karoo Slopes beside Vanderkloof Dam
Rolfontein Nature Reserve lies north of Petrusville on the edge of Vanderkloof Dam, where open upper-Karoo plains meet dolerite koppies, wooded kloofs and big water views. The combination gives the reserve more variety than a first glance suggests: wildlife, birds, fishing country, dryland walking and a sense of space all come together in one of the province’s less hurried nature destinations.
A Walk with Room to Extend
The Piet Barbet Hiking Trail is a short 4-kilometre route through the reserve. Visitors wanting to explore beyond it have historically needed to make arrangements with management in advance. That distinction matters: a signed short walk is not permission to wander anywhere through wildlife habitat. Request a current map, ask which areas are open and carry water, sun protection and a basic first-aid kit.
Wildlife, Water and Koppies
White rhino, Burchell’s zebra, springbok, gemsbok and other antelope may be seen, while patient visitors can also look for the more elusive aardvark and aardwolf. Around the dam, birding and fishing complement the reserve experience. Wildlife viewing is best done slowly and from a respectful distance; do not leave roads or designated paths in pursuit of animals.
Overnight, but Plan First
Tented camps and hiking huts have been listed at Rolfontein, yet small-reserve facilities and booking systems can change. Confirm availability, water, power, safety arrangements and the current access route before setting off. Petrusville is the sensible place to arrange supplies rather than assuming a shop will be available on site.
A Quiet Northern Cape Base
Rolfontein suits visitors who want a low-key reserve stay rather than a high-volume safari. Allow time for the dam light, a short walk, birds around the water and the changing colours on the koppies.
