Limpopo

Limpopo's hiking falls into two distinct types. The Waterberg — a malaria-free sandstone plateau and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — carries most of the province's formal trail network: the Stamvrug at Bateleur Nature Reserve, the Lindani circuit near Vaalwater, the Kransberg slackpacking route through the Thabazimbi area and the basecamp walks at Skeurkrans and Thabaphaswa. The Soutpansberg adds the Old Salt Trail, a demanding five-day slackpacking circuit through the western range, and Leshiba Wilderness for escarpment walking above Louis Trichardt.

The remaining Limpopo listings are guided wilderness walks in Big Five country — the Sweni and Mathikithi trails within Kruger, and the private-concession walking operations at Africa on Foot, Manukuza and Simbavati. These are not self-guided routes: they are armed, guide-led and structured as moving safaris rather than independent hiking. Read each hike page carefully before booking.

SA Hikes lists 14 Limpopo trails. For the reserves where these routes are found, see Limpopo Reserves. For a regional overview, see Discover Limpopo.

Limpopo's 25 listed reserves cover four distinct landscapes. The Waterberg — a malaria-free sandstone plateau and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — holds the province's largest cluster of private game reserves and most of its formal hiking trails. The Greater Kruger conservation landscape to the east includes Balule and the Timbavati concessions, where guided Big Five wilderness walking is the main draw. The Soutpansberg range in the far north shelters the recently declared Western Soutpansberg Nature Reserve alongside Nwanedi and reserves on the Limpopo Transfrontier border. Mapungubwe National Park, at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers on the Botswana and Zimbabwe borders, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for both its wildlife and its Iron Age archaeology.

SA Hikes lists each reserve with information on its landscape, management type, access and the hiking opportunities within it.

For the hiking trails themselves, see Limpopo Hikes. For a regional overview, see Discover Limpopo.
