Highveld Water and Grassland Near Carolina
Nooitgedacht Dam Nature Reserve is a roughly 3,000-hectare Highveld reserve north-west of Carolina, centred on Nooitgedacht Dam near the Komati River’s headwaters. It is a quieter Mpumalanga reserve where open water, grassland and game viewing can make for a relaxed, well-prepared day or overnight visit.
A Highveld Wildlife Mix
MTPA lists blesbok, springbok, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, zebra, reedbuck, oribi and buffalo among the reserve’s wildlife. These are useful indicators of the reserve’s grassland character, not a guarantee that every species will be visible. Early and late light, patience and binoculars usually make the best use of a visit.
Dam, Grassland and Birdlife
Water and surrounding open country offer a change from Lowveld bush. Scan shorelines and grassland for birds, watch the weather moving across the plateau and enjoy the wide views. Avoid approaching animals at the water’s edge or leaving designated areas: wildlife often uses the same quiet margins that visitors find appealing.
Activities Must Be Confirmed
Fishing, water activities and accommodation are often associated with dam reserves, but details can change with water level, maintenance, safety assessments and reserve management. Do not assume that every dam is open for swimming, boating or shoreline walking. Confirm the activities that are currently authorised before packing equipment or inviting a group.
Use a Designated Route
There is no basis for promoting independent hiking throughout the reserve. Use only a route, viewing area or guided activity that staff confirm is open. Grasslands are important habitat, and wet ground, wildlife and changing weather are reasons to avoid cutting across veld or following an informal track.
Pack for a Self-Reliant Visit
Take water, warm and waterproof layers, sun protection, food and a basic first-aid kit. Highveld conditions can change sharply between morning, midday and afternoon thunderstorm weather. Let someone know your plan and avoid arriving close to closing time.
Before You Go
MTPA includes Nooitgedacht Dam among its provincial parks. Use the official provincial-parks directory to find current contact details and confirm gate access, facilities and permitted activities before travelling.
