A Small Okavango Park with a Big Sense of Place
Popa Falls Game Park is Namibia’s smallest game park, protecting a compact patch of riverine forest, lawns and islands on the east bank of the Okavango River. Its name is slightly misleading if visitors expect a single towering waterfall: Popa Falls is a series of rapids formed where the river runs over a quartzite ledge before continuing south toward Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The setting makes Popa Falls a fine stop for a slower river visit, birding and a practical base for nearby protected areas.
Riverine Forest and Remarkable Birdlife
Jackal-berry and knob-thorn trees grow in a wetter landscape that contrasts sharply with much of Namibia. More than 400 bird species are recorded here, including slaty egret, saddle-billed stork, bat hawk, western-banded snake-eagle, collared pratincole and Heuglin’s robin. Crocodile, hippo, vervet monkey and fish species occur in and around the river. Use formal viewpoints and local guidance around the water: a river scene may look calm, but wildlife, currents and slippery rock deserve respect.
Walk, Watch and Listen Rather than Chase a Checklist
MEFT lists walking, birdwatching and angling among the park’s activities. This is best treated as an easy-paced river outing, not a long wilderness hike or a guarantee of big-game viewing. Walk only where access is currently permitted, remain aware of wildlife near the river and ask locally about the current condition of paths, rapids viewpoints and any boat activity. Bring binoculars, water and sun protection, and allow time for the changing light on the river rather than trying to fit the visit between long driving days.
A Useful North-East Base
Popa Falls is close to the Mahango and Buffalo core areas of Bwabwata National Park and can help link a wider Kavango and Zambezi journey. Several nearby lodges offer river activities, but operators, safety requirements and availability vary. Confirm all accommodation, boat, fishing, walking and park-entry details directly before travelling. This small reserve earns its place through river ecology and birds, not through a promise to replicate a large national park.
