Bloemhof Dam’s Free State Shore
Sandveld Nature Reserve protects the Free State side of Bloemhof Dam, where the Vaal and Vet rivers meet on the border with North West. The same dam is bordered by Sandveld Nature Reserve in the Free State and Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve in North West. Thornveld Birding
Kalahari thornveld is Sandveld’s special strength. Sociable weavers, pygmy falcon, fawn-coloured lark, tinkling cisticola, gabar goshawk, pied barbet and white-backed vultures are among the birds noted by DESTEA. Waterbirds and fish eagles add a second birding layer at the dam. Bring binoculars and give the camel-thorns and open sky as much attention as the water.
Wildlife and Water
DESTEA lists white rhino, giraffe, buffalo, sable, roan, wildebeest and zebra among the reserve’s wildlife. Bloemhof Dam is also a major freshwater angling venue for carp, barbel, yellowfish and mudfish. Species sightings, shore access and boat use vary with conditions, so use the reserve’s approved roads and facilities rather than unplanned shoreline tracks.
Stay Self-Sufficient
