Venda Mountain Country and the Twin Dams
Nwanedi Nature Reserve lies in the wooded northern foothills of the Soutpansberg, between Tshipise and Thohoyandou. Its roughly 11,170 hectares include the Nwanedi and Luphephe dams, often called the Twin Dams, with streams, waterfalls, forest-like pockets and mountainous bushveld adding texture to a rich Venda cultural landscape.
The Soutpansberg as “Mountain of Salt”
The reserve is in the traditional Venda region of the Soutpansberg, referred to in Venda as “Tha vhani ya muno” or mountain of salt. That local place-name gives a visit more depth than a generic game-drive description. Be courteous at regional access points and communities, and ask before photographing people, homes or cultural places.
Tshihovhohovho Falls and the Water Landscape
Tshihovhohovho Falls is one of Nwanedi’s best-known natural features. Waterfalls and dams are beautiful but need sound judgement: rock can be slippery, water levels can change and dam edges can be unsafe. Follow staff guidance, keep children close and do not make swimming or scrambling assumptions from a photograph.
Plants from Fever Trees to Tree Ferns
Limpopo Wildlife Resorts highlights yellowwoods, fever trees, giant cabbage trees, proteas, ancient tree ferns and a dozen acacia species. This botanical range reflects the transition between slopes, moist ravines and drier bushveld. Walk slowly enough to notice it, and never collect flowers, bark, seeds or ferns from a protected reserve.
Birds of Prey and a Varied Bushveld
Rocky summits are particularly good country for raptors, while dams and vegetation add other birding opportunities. Use binoculars instead of closing distance, leave nests and cliffs undisturbed, and keep drones out of the reserve. A quiet early morning can be more valuable to a birdwatcher than a full day of hurried driving.
Activities with Clear Boundaries
Nwanedi lists self-game drives, unguided hiking trails, mountain biking, fishing and non-motorised water activities using visitors’ own equipment. Confirm the exact routes, current conditions and permits at reception. An unguided trail is not a route without risk: take water, sun protection, navigation backup and a realistic turnaround time.
Stay without Overloading the Reserve
The resort lists rondavels, rooms, camping, pools, picnicking and group facilities. Check the facility type and availability directly, especially for a larger group. Keep campsites and accommodation quiet at night, store food securely and leave the vegetation and shoreline as you found them.
