Difficult Hikes
All Hikes in 'Difficult Hikes'
Difficult hikes are for walkers with solid fitness, suitable equipment and confidence on sustained climbs, rough ground or longer distances. They may involve steep ascents and descents, route-finding, exposed terrain, long days, stream crossings or a location where weather can make the route more demanding.
Read beyond the label
Difficulty is relative: a well-marked route can still be hard in heat, wind or rain, while a shorter mountain walk may require more judgement than a longer lowland trail. Use this tag to find likely challenges, then read the individual guide for distance, elevation, access, terrain and any permit or guide requirement.
Prepare honestly
Carry water, food, warm and waterproof layers, navigation and a first-aid kit appropriate to the setting. Start early, leave a route plan with someone reliable and turn back if conditions or the group’s pace make the original objective unsafe.
