Gauteng
Gauteng's hiking trails are predominantly short day walks in nature reserves on the margins of Johannesburg and Pretoria. The Magaliesberg range to the west, Suikerbosrand to the south and the Hennops gorge to the north offer the most substantial trail options within reach of the urban core. None demand multi-day commitment; most suit a half-day or full day out of the city.
For a regional overview, see Discover Gauteng. For the reserves where these trails are found, see Gauteng Reserves.
Gauteng's nature reserves serve a primarily peri-urban function — providing accessible green space and wildlife habitat within and around one of Africa's largest metropolitan areas. Suikerbosrand, Rietvlei and the Cradle of Humankind reserves are the most substantial. SA Hikes lists 38 Gauteng reserves with information on their landscapes, access and the hiking options within each.
For the hiking trails themselves, see Gauteng Hikes. For a regional overview, see Discover Gauteng.
