Sandstone Highlands and Open Grassland

The Free State is often experienced from the road, but its best walking country asks visitors to slow down. Eastern highlands around Clarens and Golden Gate bring warm sandstone cliffs, mountain grassland and wide views toward Lesotho, while the province’s farms, dams and smaller reserves offer more relaxed escapes from the city. It is a region where a short, well-chosen trail can be as satisfying as a long expedition, especially when the light turns the sandstone gold late in the day.

Golden Gate and the Highlands

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is the province’s best-known hiking setting, with short marked walks as well as more demanding options. The wider Clarens area adds access to the Maloti foothills, horse trails, mountain views and a practical base for walkers. Walk for Landscape, Not a Checklist

The Free State’s charm lies in space, changing weather, grassland birds, rock formations and a quieter rhythm. Keep to paths to protect sensitive vegetation and reduce erosion, give wildlife and livestock room, close gates where instructed and avoid crossing private land without permission. A province of broad horizons deserves an itinerary with enough time to pause at a lookout, watch a storm build or enjoy a village meal after a walk.

Prepare for Sun, Wind and Sudden Weather

Highveld and mountain weather can change quickly. Carry water, sun protection, a warm layer and rain protection even for a day walk; use shoes with grip on sandstone and wet ground; and turn back early if lightning, mist or deteriorating weather makes the plan less safe. For farm or destination hikes, confirm the access process, group rules and facilities directly with the host before travelling.
