The full route covers three hiking days and one mixed walking-and-kayaking day.
Day 1 — Blombos to Jongensfontein: About 13.5 km. This is the hardest day, with loose sand and some rough, rocky terrain. The route passes the Blombos coastal landscape, shell middens, the Blombos rock arch and several sea-viewing points before reaching Jongensfontein.
Day 2 — Jongensfontein to Stilbaai: About 12 km of easy-to-moderate walking. The route follows the coastline past Jongensgat arch and Noordkapper Point, then continues via the fish traps and milkwood forest of the Skulpiesbaai area towards Stilbaai.
Day 3 — Goukou River and Stilbaai: Around 5 km on foot and 4 km by kayak. This easier day includes a walk around Stilbaai and the river mouth, a museum stop linked to Blombos Cave interpretation, and a guided paddle on the Goukou River. The exact supporting visits and transfers should be confirmed with the operator.
Day 4 — Preekstoel to Geelkrans: About 12 km, with an optional extension to roughly 16 km. This is a there-and-back beach walk across the eastern side of Stilbaai, where aeolianite cliffs, ancient dune formations and a remote stretch of coast form the final stage.
What to expect
This is a coastal trail, so weather can change quickly. Pack a comfortable day pack, water container, windproof and waterproof layers, sun protection, personal medication and footwear that handles sand, uneven rocks and beach walking. The operator normally supplies logistical support on guided departures, but inclusions and route variations can change.
The first day needs realistic preparation: it is longer and involves loose sand and rougher ground than the later stages. Heritage features, including middens and fish traps, are sensitive. Enjoy them with a guide and leave every shell, stone and cultural object in place.
Accommodation and trail support
The standard guided format uses comfortable shared holiday-house-style accommodation, with meals and bedding arranged as part of the departure. This support is useful context for a slackpacking route, but it should not become a separate accommodation listing on SA Hikes.
Shorter two- and three-day options may be offered on selected departures. Treat those as booking variations, not separate trail entries, unless the live operator publishes a substantially different permanent route.
